experiments in mixed media art

click to enbiggen
Inspired somewhat by Carnivàle the series, I made one of my first mixed-media pictures, lettering/ collage.  The idea of doing collages, as a whole, came from my friend in Los Angeles, Lucia. She takes it to a whole different and awesome level.

our storm

Pictured is a piece I lettered for my mother-in-law, someone who I find to be amazingly inspirational and woman-centered.

She encouraged me to learn all I did of anti-hierarchy and respect for my fellow human beings. The peice is hung from a stick of driftwood I found on the beach by my house. It's a little blurry, but it reads:
Speak to me of your power. Speak to me in riddles, in a woman’s tongue. This day is coming into being and I need no translation. I can feel you breathing, sisters. The calm static before this long-awaited storm.

Our storm.

This is a stanza in a poem written for my mother-in-law by another woman, whom I only know as "allecto". If anything else is known about this person, I would be happy to give credit as due, here. It's a wonderful poem.

david bowie has a song for everything

I made this set for a couple who are fans of David Bowie. This is from his song "Beat of your Drum" from the movie Labyrinth.

I fused these for ease of posting, but the originals are two pieces.
Photograph king, watches you go
Fashions may change, heaven knows,
but you still leave a stain on me
Supplement queen,
your colours may fade
Seasons may change, weather blows, but you still leave a
mark on me

Wrong-negative fades-never the twain, reckless and tame

I like the beat of your drum
I like to look in your eyes
I like to look thru your things
I'd like to beat on your drum

I like the smell of your flesh
I like the dirt that you dish
I like the clothes that you wear
I'd like to beat on your drum
I thought the lyrics were just the perfect thing to describe the rhythms of their relationship.

benefit for new orleans a success

Loved the:
gumbo,
art,
music
and company.

Face painting! ^__^

There were only two performers from the Lindsey family, but they sounded fantastic.

John Lindsey/ guitar and vocals
Jesse Lindsey / drums and vocals
Other featured musicians were God Made Flesh, who coordinated the benefit, Emily Lindsey and the Gullywhumpers.

Artists include Jenna Colby, Emily Lindsey, Penny Bergman, Daysha Gunther, Heather Corinna of Scarleteen, Kate Cendejas and a few others (and a little piece of my own, which I'm very happy to say "sold!")

All Jenna Colby art for sale was snapped up!

The extremely talented Kate Cendejas

collages by Emily Lindsey

and many wonderful paintings by Penny and Drew Bergman

I'm proud to have been a part of the Friends of New Orleans music and art benefit.
Thanks, JW!

friends of new orleans II

This is a break from my usual lettering-heavy theme, and its simplicity might explain why I don't do it that often. My 'drawing' skills just aren't there. I much more prefer using symbols/lettering/doodles to represent something. The final was adhered to a weathered board I found down at the beach by my house, like so:

hung with mardis gras beads:

Edited to say: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the movie, was good but I was a little bit disappointed in the amount of time spent on the teeny-bop romance versus the adventure and suspense I expected from my experience reading this action-packed book. Definitely worth the missed sleep, but perhaps not the endless lines in tiny halls with no ventilation or air conditioning to speak of. >.< (The theatre had about a dozen screens sold out for the debut event, and there were people lined up since 6 pm. Apparently, my die-hard fandom, expressed by attending a midnight showing of a movie on a work-week, simply wasn't die-hard enough!)

the beloved pimpernel

And of course, there is the beloved Pimpernel--beloved book, beloved movie and beloved Broadway play (may I one day be able to see it, amen.)

For sister-mine, who might actually love it more than I.

my nerd-like art

My sister-in-law wrote the beautiful poem pictured above, so for her birthday I drew it out for her and affixed it to the inside of an old, torn-off hard book-cover. I love the process of making up different lettering styles and combining them for a unique feel. And lucky me, my locally owned and operated book store allows me to comb through their selection of used books that they will be donating for old, broken hardbacks to recycle. Since I am a fanatic book-lover who can't stand the idea of cannibalizing a perfectly good old book, I have to hunt down already doomed ones for my pieces.

And, of course, the Harry Potter quote for a friend who is a huge fan--and slaves for accountants day in and day out.

Now to find the perfect one for my sister's birthday this week. All you Gemini babies are killing me; I'm wounded, here!
